Whenever you apply to travel to USA, as an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you need to go through the ESTA Visa application process. This is usually a very fast process that might take just couple of days. But your essential private data which you use across the process is something that you need to take very seriously into consideration.

You want to backup your data all the time both in the cloud but also offline, either using a hard drive or USB stick that will be encrypted.

For countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) with the United States, such as Australia and New Zealand, travel options for their citizens include travelling to the United States without applying for a visa. However, to make use of this option, one must apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

What Is Electronic System For Travel Authorization (ESTA)

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is web-based automated system that determines an individual’s eligibility to travel to the United States without a visa for tourism or business for up to 90 days. The individual must be from a country in participating in the VWP. The program is run by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Customs and the Border Protection (CBP) in consultation with the State Department.

The ESTA collects biographical information of the applicant. Importantly, it determines the eligibility of the applicant to use the VWP. However, you should note that attaining ESTA is not an authorisation of a traveller’s admission to the United States. The U.S. CBP will determine admissibility upon arrival at the point of entry.

Typically, it takes up to 72 hours for an application to be authorised by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. With this in mind, you are advised to apply for your ESTA Visa USA at least 72 hours prior to starting your journey, if you do not have one. Once you receive your ESTA authorization, it is valid for up two years. As such, you can use it to make multiple visits to the United States for up to two years or when the passport expires, whichever is sooner. Importantly, you should not attempt to travel without having received the authorization email.

Travel purposes that are not permitted under VWP include study for credit, employment, work as foreign press or journalist, and permanent residency.

What Are The ESTA Visa USA Requirements?

The first requirement is the applicant must have the unrestricted right to permanent residency in the VWP participating country. However, for individuals who have U.S. dual citizenship they do not have to apply for the USA Visa Waiver while travelling to the U.S. Instead they should use their United States Passport.

One should also have an enhanced secure e-Passport. As of April 1st, 2016 for one to qualify and apply for the ESTA, they must have an e-passport that contains the electronic chip. The chips contain information that can match the passport with the identity of the traveller.

You should also have a return or onward ticket with an ESTA registered airline or cruise company. You should also have not violated any of the United States’ Immigration Law, including violating the VWP for instance by overstaying the 90 days.

Another requirement for one to be eligible to use the ESTA is to have not travelled to the Libya, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Yemen, Sudan, and Syria on or before, March 1, 2011. However, limited exceptions are provided for individuals who travelled for military services or diplomatic purposes. In the same light, individuals who are Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Sudan nationals are not eligible for the VWP and hence cannot apply for ESTA. However, such individuals can still apply for the regular visa.

In order to backup your private data properly in terms of your USA Visa application information, you want to make sure you understand the important of the critical private info. In the same time, understanding what this US Visa represents is a crucial point in your safety data measures.
